Wantagh Boys Lacrosse Taking On Nation's Top Team Wednesday

Warriors hosting number one-ranked Garden City in regular season finale that will decide first place in Conference B-1.

The Wantagh boys lacrosse program will have a chance to knock off the number one ranked team in the nation Wednesday on its home field.

Wantagh (12-2) is playing host to Garden City (14-0), which is the top-rated team in the most recent Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse top 25 high school power rankings. First faceoff Wednesday between the longtime Nassau County rivals is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. 

Both the Warriors and Trojans are 7-0 in the Conference B-1 standings and the winner of Wednesday's game at  will earn the top seed in the playoffs that get underway next week. Wantagh has outscored its last seven Nassau County opponents 90-45 starting with  against neighborhood rival Seaford on April 12.

Wantagh is coming off a 16-2 romp over Wheatley/Carle Place on Friday that featured eight different goal scorers led by Hofstra-bound Brian VonBargen and Corey Stavis with three apiece. Garden City dominated its longtime rival Manhasset, 9-3, in the annual Woodstick Classic on Saturday. 

Wantagh and Garden City have been longtime rivals on the lacrosse field and in many other sports. In last year’s meeting at Garden City, the Trojans handed the Warriors an . Two years ago Wantagh defeated Garden City in an overtime thriller 10-9 during the regular season but the Trojans got payback in the Nassau County Class B semifinals six weeks later .

Garden City holds a 13-3 lead in its series with Wantagh that dates back to 1979, according to gardencitylacrosse.com
