Wantagh Girls Lacrosse Moves to Semifinals

Lady Warriors easily defeat Jericho 20-5 in quarterfinals Friday.

The Wantagh girls lacrosse team’s quest to return to the Nassau County Class B title game at Hofstra got off to a flying start Friday afternoon in its quarterfinal playoff game with the Lady Warriors scoring 13 of the game’s first 14 goals in a 20-5 win over Jericho. 

The blowout win over Jericho at moves to the Warriors to the semifinals to face Manhasset on Wednesday at Denton Avenue Field in New Hyde Park. Wantagh (13-3) is aiming for its second straight appearance in the Nassau County title game at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium, where last year the Lady Warriors fell to Garden City 20-13.

Second-seeded Wantagh jumped out to a huge lead on Jericho right from the opening draw and continued a balanced scoring it has displayed throughout the season with eight different scorers. The Warriors were led by six goals from Colleen Lovett, four tallies from North Carolina-bound senior Paula Schmidt and a hatrick from Brittany Rader.

“We try to get the entire offense involved,” said Wantagh head coach Bobbi Colivita.

Wantagh’s defense was also rock solid against Jericho with Sacred Heart University-bound goalie Kelly Keenan recording nine saves.

The Wantagh-Manhasset Nassau County Class B semifinal game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Denton Avenue Field. During the regular season Wantagh defeated Manhasset 13-11 at home on April 7 paced by four goals from Hofstra-bound senior April Iannetta.
