Wantagh Girls Volleyball Advances to Semifinals

Lady Warriors defeat Hewlett in Class A Quarterfinals Thursday.

In Thursday's Class A quarterfinal game between the Wantagh and Hewlett girls volleyball teams, the undefeated Lady Warriors made quick work of the Bulldogs in just three games. Hewlett quickly became part of the list of numerous schools to have fallen victim to the Warriors (11-0) this season in the match held at

This was the first meeting of these two teams this year it looked like Wantagh had a tough game ahead at the start of the game. The Warriors battled point for point with Hewlett before winning the first game 25-22. The Lady Warriors then quickly dusted off Hewlett in the net two games 25-11 and 25-16.

"We didn't come out strong, I was a little nervous." said Wantagh head coach Katie Lux.  "We had to have a little pow-wow in order to fire them up."

Anna Paulik, Nicole Kelly, and Cristina Bush all contributed heavily to the win for Wantagh. Bush and Kelly each had 10 assists, and Paulik knocked them dead with 10 kills. It may not have been Wantagh's best game of the season but teamwork and prior playoff experience pulled them through.

"They needed to realize this is playoffs and you have to be on your A game because everyone is dying to win," said Lux. "Once they realized that they pulled it off."

Number one-seeded Wantagh will next be in action on Monday in a semifinal match with fifth-seeded South Side at Long Beach High School starting at 6:30 p.m. A win will out the Lady Warriors in the Nassau County Championship for the second straight year.
