Wantagh Softball Team Eyes Another Conference Title

Lady Warriors have high hopes in 2011.

The softball team has high expectations this season following a 2010 campaign that saw the Lady Warriors go 14-3 and finish as co-conference champions.

“Our number one goal is to win the conference, and go to counties hands down,” said Wantagh softball head coach Christine Moran.

A big reason for the optimism on the diamond for the Lady Warriors is its experience in the pitcher’s circle. Taking the mound for the lady Warriors this year will be Taylor Corwin and senior Jaclyn Vicente, who has been a starting pitcher at Wantagh since seventh grade and will be playing on the collegiate level at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. next year.

Guiding Wantagh’s pitching staff will be catcher Kellie Mignoli, who was Wantagh’s starting third baseman the last three years. Jen Lipski (first base), Christine Kiefer (outfield), Kelly Van O'linda (outfield), Julia Willix (third base) and Emma Ryder (shortstop) all return and are all expected to be major contributors on a team expected to be in playoff contention.

“This season all the key components are there,” said Moran, who played softball at Hofstra from 1999-2002. “I expect this season Warrior softball will make its mark in the softball community.”
