Wantagh Wrestlers Capture County Title

Warrior wrestling team caps 22-0 dual meet season with commanding championship victory against Long Beach.

wrestlers were kings of the mat Saturday capturing the Nassau County Dual meet championship with a commanding 42-18 victory over Long Beach.

Wantagh’s dominating win against the Marines at Clarke High School in Westbury was the Warrior wrestling program’s third county dual meet title in the last four years. The championship victory also capped off a perfect 22-0 dual meet season for Wantagh.

The Warriors reached the county dual meet finals against Long Beach after a dramatic 30-25 victory against neighborhood rival MacArthur with a pin by senior co-captain Steve English in the 285-pound bout sealing the semifinal win, according to a recap posted by wantaghwrestling.com.

Posting victories for Wantagh in the championship match against Long Beach were Kyle Quinn (106 pounds); Chris Araoz (126 pounds); Vincent Turano (132 pounds); Nick Vines (138 pounds); Danny McDevitt (152 pounds); Chris Loew (170 pounds); James Corbett (182 pounds); Alex Wedel (195 pounds); Sean Tomlinson (220 pounds); English (285 pounds) and Jose Rodriguez (99 pounds). Rodriguez finished the dual meet season at a perfect 35-0 .

Wantagh will look to continue its magical season next month when it takes part in the state high school wrestling tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany on Feb. 24-25. The Nassau County individual wrestling championships are scheduled for Feb. 11-12 at Hofstra University’s Mack Sports Complex.
