The Sound of Silence

An ordinance to get back our Peace and Quiet!

I moved out of the city to the tranquil suburbs of Wantagh Long Island almost 36 years ago.

As my family grew, it was a pleasure to walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the scenery and the peace and quiet. On a lazy weekend afternoon after working hard all week, it was great to just take a nap or just sit under a tree and watch the kids play.

What the heck happened?

Now, no matter what day of the week it is, from dawn 'til dusk, the incessant whining and roaring of gas operated lawn mowers, weed whackers, chain saws and leaf blowers shatter the air like a knife. One crew starts at 8 a.m. sharp followed by another and another, all day and sometimes every day. It seems like it never ends!

I am very sympathetic to the fact that these folks are performing a valuable service and just trying to make a living, but I think there needs to be some type of limit from a quality of life perspective.

What do you think about an ordinance limiting the days/hours of operation of these professional services? Perhaps every other day and only until noon on weekends. Just a thought.

How I long for the sounds of silence again.
