Champions for Charity to Benefit MOMMAS House

Holiday shoppers who spend at Americana Manhasset or Wheatley Plaza Dec. 2-4 can have 25 percent of their purchases donated to Wantagh non-profit

It happens every year. As soon as Thanksgiving ends and December rolls around, the mad dash to find the perfect holiday gifts sucks the spirit of the season right out of crazed shoppers' hearts--and wallets.

In an effort to remind Long Island's shopaholics what the holidays are really about, the Champions for Charity program at luxury shopping centers Americana Manhasset and Wheatley Plaza is giving back to those who are wishing for things more important than a cashmere sweater this Christmas.

One of the many not-for-profit organizations that will be benefiting from the charity drive is , which is located on 1857 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh. MOMMAS House, which has locations throughout Nassau County, works with Birthright International to serve as a home for young mothers (aged 17-21) and their children. The goal of MOMMAS House is to provide guidance and support to young mothers so that they can learn to independently support themselves and their children.

Since 1996, Champions for Charity has raised nearly $5 million for local non-profits across Long Island by donating a percentage of customers' purchases to the participating charity of their choice.

"Champions for Charity has grown to become one of Long Island's most anticipated philanthropic events," said Deirdre Costa Major, president of Americana Manhasset. "Over 15 years, we have woven a partnership with our customers and stores that gives back in meaningful ways by helping those in need, supporting the arts and improving the quality of life for others on Long Island."

While Americana Manhasset and Wheatley Plaza are known for designer stores such as Prada, Michael Kors and Tory Burch, there are many shops with a range of price points to choose from.

Whether it's browsing Gap at Americana, picking up toys at Funky Monkey in Wheatley Plaza, or purchasing a gift card of any amount, shoppers with a Champion Card will benefit their local charity. The card can also be used at Americana and Wheatley Plaza eateries such as Cipollini, TokuBen's Kosher Delicatessen and Bar Frites.

In order to register for a Champion Card, call 800-818-6767 or visit Concierge Services between Gap and Theory on the south side of Americana Manhasset. Cards will also be available at ELIJA's Theory event Saturday evening.
