Named in honor of Wantagh resident Joe Testaverde, the Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury nearly a decade to providing community outreach and educational support to families all while fundraising for research. In the summer of 2000, Testaverde was gearing up for his senior year at Wantagh High School when a tragic swimming accident left him paralyzed in his legs and hands.

The foundation's website features a biography of Testaverde that describes him as strong and determined despite all the challenges he's faced.

"Joe has slowly fought back. With great effort, he has regained some use of his hands, graduated high school and learned to drive. While he lives with the many side effects of Spinal Cord Injury, in addition to the obvious ones, he makes
improvements in his life daily, trying to regain as much independence as he can."

Today, Testaverde serves as the Assistant Director to the Long Island Spinal Cord Resource Center, which is located on 3445 Edgerton Ave. in Wantagh.

Sunday's fundraiser kicks off with registration at 7:30 a.m. Participants can sign up Sunday for $30.
