Marcum Workplace Challenge Set for Tuesday at Jones Beach

More than 7,000 participants from 200 companies expected for Tuesday evening's charity race.

The 2012 Marcum Workplace Challenge is on tap for in Wantagh this Tuesday with more than 7,000 participants from 200 companies expected to take part in the charity event.

The 3.5-mile race, which is Long Island’s largest annual charity run-walkis slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Parking Field 5 next to Zach’s Bay. A picnic will then follow with an awards ceremony at 8:15 p.m. The event is sponsored by Marcum LLP and is organized by the Greater Long Island Running Club, whose director is Seaford resident Mindy Davidson.

Charity beneficiaries from the Marcum Workplace Challenge are the Long Island Children's Museum in East Garden City, Long Island Cares -The Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Children's Medical Fund of New York. Since its inception in 2005, the Marcum Workplace Challenge has raised more than $150,000 for several local charities.

The national anthem will be sung by Tsara N. Smith, an off-Broadway star and student at Long Island High School of the Arts (LIHSA) in Syosset. Emmy Award-winning CBS 2 reporter Carolyn Gusoff, a Hewlett High School graduate, will sound the starting gun.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
