Seaford Man Leaving for Ethiopia on Mission With Operation Hearts and Home

Ed Donohue departing for impoverished African nation with Huntington-based non-profit group to help improve well at orphanage.

Seaford resident Ed Donohue will be departing Friday to volunteer in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with a group of six volunteers trying to make a difference in the impoverished African nation.

Donohue’s upcoming mission to Ethiopia is with the Huntington-based non-profit organization Operation Hearts and Home, whose mission is to improve lives of orphans worldwide.

Donohue, who works in the construction business, said one of the main reasons for the trip is to help improve a water well previously set up by Operation Hearts and Home volunteers. He said the well often runs out of water when electricity in Addis Ababa is forced to be turned off.

Donohue and the other volunteers are also going to help the older children at the orphanage. They are going to help them with training and finding apprenticeships. The goal is for the children to enroll in private schools enhance their futures.

Currently, the Wantagh Inn and Runyon's in Seaford are collecting new sneakers and art supplies for the orphans in Ethiopia. When Donohue and the volunteers leave on Friday they will be bringing the newly collected items with them.
