Sports and Music Icons Collaborate for John Theissen Children's Foundation

Holiday fundraiser at Mulcahy's hosted by WFAN sports radio host Mike Francesa featured musical performances from former New York Yankees star Bernie Williams and Billy Joel tribute band "Big Shot."

For more than a decade, WFAN sports radio host Mike Francesa has supported the work of the Wantagh-based (JTCF).

Francesa joined forces with New York Yankees legend Bernie Williams, renowned saxophonist Richie Cannata and Mike DelGuidice, frontman for the popular Billy Joel tribute band "Big Shot" this past Sunday at in efforts to raise funds for the foundation's 20th holiday season.

In between Sunday's radio sessions, Williams performed live on the guitar for a large crowd at Mulcahy's and participated in a one-on-one interview by Francesa focusing on his 16-year heralded career with the Yankees and his venture into music.

Williams, who broke into Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1991, developed a love for music at a young age. The former outfielder said it felt amazing to combine both of his biggest passions to help raise money for children in need.

"Mike Francesa is doing a great job helping the foundation - he has been for the last 10 years," said Williams, who retired from his spot on the New York Yankees in 2006. "It's important for me to make the time to come and support things like this."

"I had a great time today," he added. "Any time I get an opportunity to play music in front of people, it's a blessing."

Cannata, who works with the MLB icon as his music director and often performs with DelGuidice's tribute band, was the original saxophonist for Joel, the famed musician and pianist from Hicksville. After participating in the same holiday fundraiser last year, Cannata knew he would be back at Mulcahy's again.

"It's an awesome cause," said Cannata, who operates Cove City Sounds Studio in Glen Cove. "Long Island once again comes to the rescue - and this time with music and sports - that's what it's all about."

Through the last two decades, the JTCF has formed a tight bond with John Murray, owner of Mulcahy's. Murray, who recruited Sunday's special guests, said he is happy to do what he can to contribute to Theissen's work, and described the organization's founder as one of the kindest people he's ever known.

"His work is unparallel to another, it's really off the hook," said Murray. "I hope he raises a lot of money to take care of all the kids that he does. I've been around since he started, and he's one of the finest human beings I've ever met."

The JTCF is still accepting donations for its annual toy drive. New, unopened toys can be collected at the charity's fun center at 1881 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh or at any Friendly's location.
