Wantagh Parkway Bike Path Extension Opens

Newly completed projects enable local cyclists to pedal directly next to Jones Beach.

A new extension of the Wantagh State Parkway Bike Path will be open for Memorial Day weekend, state officials announced late Thursday.

The 7.5-mile path that runs along the Wantagh Parkway has been extended 0.7 miles to end up next to the Jones Beach East Bathhouse. The roughly $1 million project, which was first announced last June, features a new storage area for 100 bicycles.

"Many residents from across Long Island run, ride, and walk on the Wantagh Parkway Bike-Pedestrian Path every day.,” said State Sen. Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, in a statement. “This new path extension gives them direct access to Jones Beach, the crown jewel of the state parks' system, for the upcoming summer season. This is a great investment which will make it even easier for individuals to visit one of the best beaches anywhere in the world.”
