Asbestos Abatement Planned at Seaford HS this Summer

Project being paid for by leftover funds from 2007 capital improvements proposition.

The Seaford School District is planning an asbestos abatement project at Seaford High School this summer.

The removal of asbestos in the 1957-built building will be paid for by the $528,428 leftover from a $21.5 million capital improvements proposition that voters approved in December 2007, Seaford Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy said during this past Thursday’s board of education meeting. The building will need to be evacuated when the project occurs. Conboy emphasized that the asbestos is not harmful to students or staff in the building now as long as it is now disrupted.

Conboy said completing the asbestos abatement project in the summer would be beneficial since the district has until the end of 2013 to bond money from the 2007 referendum. Seaford Director of Facilities Andy Ward, who is certified for asbestos projects, said a summer timetable is doable.

“We’re in the ninth inning now so we have to fish or cut bait,” said Conboy of time running out to bond funds from the 2007 proposition to address the asbestos issue. “We know one way or the other this asbestos abatement has to take place."
