Seaford Schools Explore Electronic Payment Options

New method would eliminate paper trail and help capture irregularities.

The Seaford School District is looking into a major electronic shift that would eliminate paper sign-ins for employees and move to a digital method.

On Thursday, Kevin Hamill, a senior account executive for Harris School Solutions, gave a presentation to the Board of Education regarding WinCap, which the district already uses for business purposes.

Hamill's proposal included multiple options. First, there's an employee swipe-in and a finger scan to ensure identity and prevent other's from logging in. If the finger mechanism malfunctions, the camera, which is part of the mounted device, will take a photo to confirm. The unit would mount on the wall at a location that the district would choose.

The other option is to use a computer-only system, in which employees could meet at a library or another option, which the district would choose. They would use a username and a passcode, which requires a lower case letter, capital letter and a character. Hamill did caution that, if the power goes down, the system would only be up if the computers were. The swipe-in plan includes a back-up battery for the unit.

"The reason for doing this is to get rid of paper, try to organize and make sure everything is inputted correctly," Hamill said.

The system would allow administrators to track who's in the building at all times, and it would be easier to catch any irregularities, Hamill added.

Superintendent Brian Conboy thanked Hamill for his presentation, and he said the district is looking into multiple options before making a decision.

"We have another presentation at our next meeting," Conboy said. "We will take a close look and let you know what move we decide to make."
