Wantagh Girls Lacrosse Welcomes Stiffer Competition in 2013

Wantagh selected as one of county's 10 top teams to compete in new "power league."

The Wantagh High School girls lacrosse team has a more rigorous schedule than usual in 2013 and has thus far been rising to the challenge.

Wantagh is among an elite group of 10 Nassau County teams selected to play its regular season schedule in Conference I, a league that has been nicknamed "the power league." The group consists of the 10 best girls lacrosse teams in the county regardless of school size determined by coaches and in addition to Wantagh also includes Massapequa, Farmingdale, Garden City, Cold Spring Harbor, North Shore, Manhasset, Long Beach, Port Washington and Plainedge.

The stiff competition has not fazed Wantagh so far with the Warriors capturing its first four games including a 12-8 win against longtime Class C power Cold Spring Harbor on March 20. Wantagh's unbeaten start will be put to the test Friday when the Warriors battle last year's Class A runner up Massapequa at Burns Park starting at 4:30 p.m.

"The team and I are really excited at how well our season has started off thus far," said Wantagh senior attacker Colleen Lovett, who will continue her lacrosse career at Georgetown next year. "I think being in the 'power leauge' is beneficial for us because we always see tough competition in the Class B playoffs so playing other very good teams from Class A and C will definitely prepare us for our playoffs."

When the regular season concludes on May 6 at North Shore, Wantagh will return to Class B for the playoffs and try to capture that elusive championship. Wantagh has fallen to Garden City in the Nassau County Class B finals six of the last seven years, including a 14-12 defeat to the Lady Trojans in 2012.

"As a team our goal as always is to go as far as we can in the playoffs and to ultimately win the county finals," Lovett said.
